Chris and Martha follow, posing as William's fiancée and relative to swindle him. Alison battles them to protect William. During the Depression, William's business fails. Alison exposes Chris and Martha's schemes, banishing them. Working together, Alison and William fall in love, opening a bakery to help the poor. They marry, but Chris and Martha try to murder Alison on their wedding day. William sacrifices himself to save her. Chris and Martha are punished. Heartbroken, Alison and Rose bury William.
